Summer Family Photo Sessions: Why this season might be the perfect time to update your family photos

Uncategorized

As a mom of six and a family photographer, I know just how tricky it can be to schedule a photo session that works for everyone—especially during the busy school year. That’s one reason I love offering summer family photo sessions. With more flexible schedules and longer days, summer often provides the breathing room families need to slow down and capture the beauty of this season of life.

Flexible Schedules = Happier Families

Summer often means no school, fewer sports practices, and less rushing around. That flexibility makes it easier to book your session without stress. Mornings tend to work well for many families during summer, especially if you’re trying to work around naps or early bedtimes.

And yes—I do morning sessions! While golden hour gets a lot of love, summer evenings can be hot and start late. By 7:30 or 8 p.m., many toddlers are melting down. As a mom myself, I get it. I’ve built my photography approach around honoring the family rhythm, which is why I often recommend 9 a.m. sessions in the summer. The light is bright, clean, and cheerful—and most importantly, your kiddos are well-rested and happy.

Summer Colors Are Simply Beautiful

From green fields to lush trees and blooming florals, summer is bursting with color. Whether we’re in an open field, under a canopy of trees, or by a creek, the backdrop is beautiful. One of my favorite things about summer sessions is how playful and warm they feel—and how that carries over into the final images.

Outfits That Flow and Breathe

Another hidden benefit? Summer clothing photographs beautifully. Light cottons, gauze, and linens have an effortless, organic feel that reflects the heart of family photography: real moments, real textures, real connection. Plus, summer colors—creamy whites, soft pastels, and gentle neutrals—shine in the natural light.

Kiddos + Water = Joy

Many of my summer sessions end by the water—whether it’s a shallow creek, a pond, or a shaded riverside spot. It’s not just fun (though it definitely is)—it also helps kids relax and unwind after taking photos. And let’s be honest: those splashy, barefoot-in-the-creek photos? They’re often the ones you’ll treasure most.
