How to Cut Your Kids Hair at Home

Simple Living

Cutting your kids hair at home is a great way to save money and time! We have a family of 8 so even if we stretched it 6-8 weeks between cuts we still found ourselves spending over a thousand dollars a year. Add gas, tip, and the money we spent on eating out afterward and that is a huge part of the budget that I’d rather put elsewhere.

I did some research and it turns out home haircuts aren’t as hard as I thought they were. All you need are the right tools, a simple tutorial, and patience! My first few few cuts were okay but after about the third or fourth one I had the hang of it. For some of my kids I use clippers and for others I do all scissor cuts. It’s just how I like it so you’ll see materials and tutorials for both below!

There are a lot of videos out there but my favs are from The Haircut Box on youtube. She’s a Mama and uses simple, easy to follow instructions. She also sells her own haircut at-home kits but I was able to source everything cheaper by shopping for individual items on amazon!

MY FAVORITE TOOLS FOR HAIRCUTTING AT HOME

A good pair of scissors
There’s no need to break the bank though. You can get a great pair for under $20! Just make sure to dry them after you use them and reserve them only for hair and they’ll last forever.

Clippers
Investing in a nice pair of clippers will last you for YEARS. We love this set because it’s professional grade and comes with a smaller trimmer that’s great for edging.

Clipper Oil
This will extend the life of your clippers and for under $10 it’s totally worth it.

Comb
This comb is specifically designed for haircutting, it makes it way easier and it’s pretty!

Neck Duster
The best part. My kids love getting to brush off afterward and I love that they don’t complain of itchy necks all day.

Mister
This is a long spray mister so it is way more effective in wetting down the hair. Highly recommend it over a traditional spray bottle!

Cape
I spent 6 months clipping a towel to my kids necks. Trust me, you want the cape. The hair slides right off and it’s way more comfortable for everyone involved.

That’s it, friends! I can’t wait for you to start saving money and time by cutting your kids hair at home!

As an amazon associate, I make a commission from products bought through these links. They cost you nothing extra but allow me to provide for my family in a small way! Nothing will ever be recommended that we don’t personally use or love!
